About the Podcast

The Flock
Everything you need to raise a happy, healthy backyard flock ? season by season, episode by episode.
Ever wanted fresh eggs in your own backyard — but weren't sure where to even start?

The Flock is your complete, week-by-week guide to raising chickens (and eventually ducks, turkeys, quail, and geese) at home, hosted by Dr. Gregory Archer and presented by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension — the same trusted source generations of farmers and homesteaders have turned to for research-backed agricultural guidance.

Most backyard poultry advice online is scattered: a forum post here, a five-minute video there, none of it building on what came before. The Flock is different. Over three full years — 156 weekly episodes — we take you from "should I even do this?" all the way to confidently running a mature, thriving flock, covering every season, every challenge, and every milestone in between.

Why listeners stick with this show:

It's genuinely sequential, not just a topic dump. Episode 1 asks whether backyard poultry is right for you. By episode 52, you've built a coop, survived a winter, collected your first eggs, and learned to read your flock's body language. By year three, you're running a breeding program and maybe even a small egg business. Every episode builds on the last — but you can also drop in anywhere and get real, standalone value.

It's built on real expertise, not recycled internet advice. As part of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, this show draws on decades of agricultural research and hands-on poultry science — not just one hobbyist's personal experience repackaged as universal truth.

It respects your time. Each episode runs 10–15 minutes — long enough to actually teach you something, short enough to finish over morning coffee or a drive to work.

It doesn't sugarcoat the hard parts. We talk honestly about predator losses, the real cost of getting started, and the emotional weight of hard decisions — because keepers who go in with clear eyes are the ones who stick with this rewarding hobby for the long haul.

What you'll actually learn:

Year One takes you through the fundamentals: navigating local laws and HOA rules before you buy a single chick, choosing breeds suited to your climate and goals, building a predator-proof coop, brooding chicks safely, and managing your flock through a full cycle of seasons — including that first thrilling egg.

Year Two goes deeper: hatching your own chicks, adding new species to your backyard, tackling real health challenges with confidence, and exploring whether a small egg business might be right for you.

Year Three is where it all comes together: intentional breeding programs, true self-sufficiency, advanced flock health, and building something that could become a genuine family legacy — or even a small farm business.

Who this show is for:

Total beginners who've never held a chicken but are curious where their food comes from. Experienced keepers looking to fill real gaps in their knowledge. Anyone drawn to a more self-sufficient, connected way of living. And yes — anyone who's simply charmed by the idea of a backyard full of curious, clucking personalities.

Whether you're standing in a farm store aisle wondering which chicks to pick, three years into keeping and hungry for the advanced stuff, or just poultry-curious and not sure where to begin, The Flock meets you exactly where you are — and walks with you, one practical episode at a time.

New episodes every week. Subscribe now and start your journey with episode one — or jump straight to whatever challenge you're facing today.
